Waikiki is gorgeous. Honolulu is too popular, it’s gotten a bit run down.

waikiki is part of honolulu. You want waikiki so you can walk to the beach. you can easily catch the bus (10 minute ride) or even walk to downtown honolulu from there.

Waikiki definitely has nicer hotels, restaurants bars etc. The trade-off is it is also more expensive… A lot depends on:
age of travellers (adults, kids, infants, teens…)
length of stay (3 days, a week, two weeks…)
type of activities you want to do (swim, surf, snorkel, sitesee)
There are lots of reasonably priced rentals outside of the Honolulu/Waikiki area that will give you a better feel for the Hawaiian experience. A rental on the North Shore will get you away from the big city and out into the surfing community. You will also have the chance to go swim with the sea turtles, snorkel shark cove, and hang out with the locals. The drive to Honolulu is not that bad and the scenery is beautiful.
If at all possible, a trip to Kauai is a “must-do”. Another great adventure is the Atlantis submarine tour off the coast of Waikiki.

Waikiki is a neighborhood in Honolulu. Well, I guess it is hard to call it a neighborhood, but it is a subset of Honolulu. The entire island of Oahu is considered the “City & County of Honolulu”, but in reality, Honolulu is the urban area from Salt Lake to Hawaii Kai on the southern side of the island. The vast majority of hotel rooms on Oahu are in Waikiki. THere are great beaches all over the island, but Waikiki has a ton of things to do & is where most tourists will stay.

Waikiki is part of Honolulu – it is the part between Diamond Head and the Harbor, from Waikiki Beach to Ala Wai Canal.
Better beach – Kailua
More things to do – all over the island – Paradise Cove, luau in Ko’Olina; Polynesian Cultural Center, near Turtle Bay on North Shore; Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial, about 10 miles West of Honolulu; Shopping, Ala Moana Shopping Center, just West of Waikiki; Aloha Swap meet, Aiea, near Pearl City; International Marketplace, middle of Waikiki. Restaurants – everywhere. Nice hotels, everywhere, just depends on how much and what amenitites you want. Jet Skiing, parasailing; Hawaii Kai, just west of Hanauma Bay. Hike Diamond Head – awesome views. Kewala Basin Yacht Harbor (across from Ward Center) has snorkeling, dinner boat trips, parasailing, diving, snorkeling. Check out the rainforest areas, go hiking or visit the summer home of Royalty on the Pali Hwy. Too many things to mention. And that’s just Oahu. Next visit, try the Big Island or Maui or Kauaii.

Technically Waikiki is in Honolulu so your question is tough to answer.
If you’re looking for entertainment, hotels, and beach then Waikiki is your best bet. It’s also tourist capital of Hawaii so be prepared.
Since Waikiki is primarily hotels, tourists and beach if you want to see any of the tourist attractions, you’ll have to travel outside of Waikiki to go to things like Pearl Harbor, Hilo Hattie, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, etc.
Hope this helps…..and happy travels!

Waikiki is a part of Honolulu, which has been said.
However, Waikiki is definately a better place for tourists. Being the capital of Hawaii, the center of Honolulu is more business-based. Here is where you have all your major business buildings.
Waikiki has accessable beaches, more chain restaurants, and great hotels over looking the beach. It has any shop you’d ever want because it has to appeal to people and tourists from all over the world.
Take it from me, I lived on Oahu for 10 years.
