Planning a trip to Hawaii, what should be my budget?

mirozel17 asked:

We plan to go there for 7 days in April, certainly near Honolulu and Waikiki Beach cause we have a deal for the hotel there. What should we expect to pay as far as food, drinks and transportation? Is it the same as in mainland US? I would expect life to be cheaper there but I have no clue..
Thanks

WOW are you way off. Expect to pay about twice as much as you would for anything on the mainland!!!! If you are open to trying new food, you can eat what the locals eat for about 10-15 a plate. Fast food is about $6-$7 a meal. One thing you have to remember about Hawaii Is that its all Natural Beauty that they cant charge you for so they have to get there money on everything else. Also you need to realize that everything is shipped in so that’s also why you are going to pay a lot more for your stuff. Its well worth it to come and enjoy but I would plan on spending any where from $2000-$5000 depending on what you want to get out of your trip. Have fun and enjoy. Don’t worry about the money Hawaii is a once in a life time thing for most people so live it up!!

no eating can be quite expensive, 10 to 15 bucks for dinner, but you can find cheaper, drinks are good during happy hour, I found a hotel bar that served 1 dollar mai tai’s, but no its not the same as the mainland, even at micky d’s its higher

    Create a video blog…instantly.

It is SOO much more expensive! I mean for four people to have pizza, we spent $72….And to go swim with dolphins, do an island tour and a luau was $1500 for 6 people. Plan a large budget! But don’t expect it to be cheaper because think about it, everything has to be imported to Hawaii so its gonna be more expensive.

Plan on hotel-priced food like any other tourist area. You should rent a car for part of the time, but you can enjoy the Waikiki beach for a day or two, and take a bus downtown to see Iolani Palace and go to Aloha Tower marketplace (great places like Gordon Biersch to have a meal while watching the sunset). If you go to Pearl Harbor, get there early and catch the Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri, Pacific Aviation Museum and the Bowfin Submarine Museum (a good day’s adventure). There is the Polynesian Cultural Center (good for a short visit, 5 Pacific Island cultures plus a luau). Lots of hiking, both easy and harder, and a drive around the island is always good.

WAY more expensive than most of the mainland.

If you are staying in Waikiki, the restaurants and drinks are very expensive. The Bus is the cheapest form of transportation, and goes pretty much every where on Oahu; however, expect long rides! Renting a car is about the same as larger cities on the mainland, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, New York …

Budget for 7 days really depends on what you are doing here. If you have already paid in advance for your hotel and flight, and if you intend to stay mostly on the beach with no shopping, then your main expense will be food and drink. If you plan to do stuff while you’re here, like a luau, figure anywhere between $85 to $125 per person. Para-sailing or snorkeling off a sailboat, another $45 to $75 per person.

Hawaii.. Waikiki particularly is REALLY expensive. Expect to pay $15 per person for a restaurant breakfast at a resort. A plate lunch is around $8 (not at a resort), and dinner can cost $25 per person. One thing we like to do when we go is to go to a local grocery store and get some crackers and snacks so we only eat out two meals a day. There are also some really great local fruit stands and farmer’s markets. As far as activities..expect to pay a premium. Things are much more expensive on the islands because everything must be shipped from the mainland. The most reasonable items are locally made. Have a fantastic time, but I’d budget about $2500 for food and activities for 7 days.
