All the friends who came to visit me when I lived on Oahu said their favorite part was when we just drove around the island: around the eastern tip of the island, up the Windward Side, down the North Shore, and back to Honolulu.

My favorite spot to stop was the Valley of the Temples: Byodo-In, just north of Kaneohe. I understand the original (this one&#039;s a replica) in Japan is surrounded by city. There&#039;s actually a residential neighborhood right behind the temple, in front of the Pali (cliffs), but I had no idea for years--until I looked at a map!

There&#039;s a nominal charge to enter and wander. Ring the huge bell to the side to prepare your spirit to enter the temple and see the huge statue of Buddha.

Leave the feral peacocks alone.

If you want to go to the beach, go on the Waimanalo/Kailua side. If you must sunburn with the masses on Waikiki beach, walk towards Diamond Head, past the Zoo, past the Aquarium, past the Natatorium, and unfurl your tatami mat on tiny San Souci or Kaimana Beach.</description>
