I am going to Honolulu, HI for a few days and want to rent a snorkel for the whole time I’m there?

R H asked:

I have heard that it might be cheaper to just buy a snorkel and fins on the mainland and take them with me, but was wondering if there was a rental place that would be cheaper? I only need it for about 4 days. Thanks for any help! Also, I will be staying on Waikiki and won’t have a car, so anything near there would be great.

I would agree that it would be cheaper to buy something on the mainland. Hawaii is notoriously expensive.

When I was in Maui I rented a snorkel and mask for one week. It was only like 5 dollars! Really cheap. Not worth buying equipment. Have fun!

You’re better off buying. Also all the best beaches for the snorkel and fins are on the north shore (in my humble opinion). See if you can’t catch a ride to a place called Shark’s Cove on the north shore it’s near Waimea bay. Excellent place for snorkeling.

Well usually any place you stay will rent out some for about $5-$15 a day.
Usually really nice whole sets i have found over there can cost any where from 30-50 bucks.

You could call your, timeshare, hotel, wherever you are staying and ask them also.

they have a great bus system! I would try to get to the North shore. I would buy something and take it with you. If you do not want to ride the bus head towards Diamond head and snorkel there Waikiki is not very good snorkeling.

Everytime I go to Honolulu I bring my snorkel stuff just because I like the quality of the one I bought. I don’t think the prices of renting them there are outrageous, but I know the quality isn’t that great. They are overused and ripped in some places. (atleast where I rented Snorkel Bobs) If you have room in your suitcase I suggest just buying them and bringing them. If not, take your chances with the rental.

Get them before you leave. You will end up spending way more renting them on the beach, then buying them. There is a Wal-Mart and you can get there by bus. There is also a huge mall and the #8 Waikiki bus goes there every 10 minutes or so.
Have a good time. This is the perfect time of year to go there.

Waikiki has plenty of rental gear. Many hotels provide gear for guests (for a fee of course)
Rent your fins. Four days is not long and fins are cumbersome to carry around.

But buy your own snorkel. ( Who wants to use a “community” snorkel?)

Snorkel gear at Costco used to be $35 (a snorkel at a dive shop is easily $25), now it’s $60 – that still may be a bargain to renting which could be $10/day. Also what I find, if you rent from a place other than a dive shop (like a tour), they give you a really crappy snorkel that you get to keep (woohoo).

I recommend buying your own stuff at a good price and taking it with you. Also, there are Costco’s in Kona, Maui and Honolulu.

Snorkel Bob’s is the place. Go to to get your information. A lot of people use them. They are on all hawaii islands and you can return stuff 24/7. Also, you can reserve what you need before you get to Hawaii. Snorkel Bob’s has maps on their web site for locations near you. Aloha!

It would be cheaper for you to buy it while you’re here. If you’re looking for a set that’s good enough for the casual snorkeler, you should check out Walmart, Sports Authority, or Don Quixote. All of those stores have good variety and price range.

If you’re looking for cheap, I would NOT suggest you rent from anywhere in Waikiki. Besides……would you really want to use something that someone’s else mouth has been on?

    Good luck and happy travels!

Right now would not be a good idea to go snorkeling off the North Shore. The waves will be getting big about this time of year. Not a good idea for a naive island visitor.

The best and closest place for the best snorkeling would be haunauma bay. You can take “The Bus” to the bay. The bay is a fish sanctuary. I guess you have to pay little money to get access to the bay. I am not sure. I got my naui certification back in the 70′s there. There is a lot of fish in the water. Take some bread. They will eat out of your hand.

You can snorkel off waikiki, but the water tends to be a little “milky”. I would not plan seeing too many fish there. Diamond Head is okay, but there can be a lot of wave action. I used to surf out there.
