The ceremony you are asking about happens at Ala Moana Beach Park & I do believe Bitter is correct about it being Buddhist in origin, but according to the web site below, it is not a Buddist thing, “it’s a human thing”.. It is a very beautiful ceremony. I have never been, but it is covered each year by the local news. Typically, holidays are pretty crowded, but tourism is off significantly this year, so it might not be too bad.

There are a variety of events on Memorial Day. Consider going to the one at Punchbowl Cemetery.

Every Holiday is crowded in Waikiki. If you can avoid them, I would consider it. Midweek flights and late night/morning tend to cost less as well.

it’s pretty crowded all the time, but that’s okay! I Googled it, and although there wasn’t anything about this year, there were articles about year’s past, so I would assume it is an annual event. No where did it mention that it was a Buddhist event, if that matters. Bitter ol man is more bitter today than usual!
