Has anyone stayed at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel in Waikiki?

smartypants asked:

I would like to take my 11-year old granddaughter to Honolulu this summer, and I’m thinking of the Queen Kapiolani, due to its location and good price.

However, it’s old…. and the reviews on the internet are somewhat mixed…..

Any opinions from anyone?

I want clean & safe, but I can’t afford luxurious, and this is the area of Waikiki that I want, due to the proximity to the good-swimming-no-waves beach and the zoo!

We have stayed there and have never had a bad experience. Our theory is that it is so central to all of the things we wanted to do. It is across the street from the zoo and a block away from the best beach for children. I wouldn’t say it was a luxury hotel, but then we are not in the room for long. We would definitely go back again.

I haven’t stayed there, but I have walked through the lobby. I think it would be an OK place to stay. Not especially luxurious, but nice enough. I don’t think you would have to worry about safety, & the location cannot be beat. I think this link gives a fairly accurate description of the place.
