Pick up the Oahu Saver book…you can find them everywhere…they have some good deals on Activities! Also download the ‘Trip Advisor’ site I gave above..
The Best way to get around is Public Transportation…Traffic on Oahu is outrageous…so I would only rent a car for a day or two to get to the other side of the Island..North Shore

Go swim and snorkel at Hanauma Bay.
Go to Waikiki’s Duke’s Lane which has a multitude of various little cart shops and buy stuff. These cart shops have a lot of jewelry, Hawaiian gifts and memorabilia, etc.
Go hiking. There are a lot of other great, even better places to hike and enjoy Oahu’s true nature than Diamond Head, such as Makapuu Lighthouse, Stairway to Heaven, etc. Google these and it’ll come up, including directions and helpful tips.
Go eat at various restaurants, especially in Waikiki. The most notable restaurant there is probably The Cheesecake Factory.
Go to the Polynesian Cultural Center.
    Go swim at Waikiki Beach.

Well, an exhaustive list would require an Oahu guidebook, so I will focus on some tips that you may not find out everywhere. I’m assuming that you have already learned about the typical tourist things (Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, etc.). If you are planning on Pearl Harbor, I assume you will have a car.

Here are some suggestions you may not have seen:

    1. There is a free Luau at Kuhio Beach Park (in Waikiki) around sunset. Local performers, but usually pretty good…and free.

    2. The Waikiki Aquarium is interesting because it has some Hawaiian fish you can’t see in other aquariums. It is small, so it should only take an hour or so.

    3. Puu Ualakaa State Wayside near Honolulu is a great place to watch the sunset. You can see Diamond Head, Waikiki, Downtown, and even Pearl Harbor from there.

    4. The Manoa Falls trail is just a few minutes’ drive above Honolulu and offers a beautiful tropical hike to a waterfall. Bring bug spray and umbrellas/ponchos.

    5. Foster Garden in Honolulu is really pretty and right next to downtown. What’s so amazing about this garden is the huge trees and exotic tropical plants you can see here. It’s not too big, either, so you can walk around it in less than an hour.

    6. Did you know that Honolulu has the oldest Chinatown in the U.S.? Little Village Noodle House is an incredible place to eat, with free on-site parking and reasonable prices.

    7. The Ala Moana Shopping Mall is indeed huge, but not particularly Hawaiian in my opinion. If you’re short on time, you might skip this. There are a lot of more uniquely “Hawaiian” stores on the streets near Waikiki.

    8. Hanauma Bay: 15 mins east of Waikiki, great snorkeling, but go early in the day to avoid the crowds and stirred up water.

    9. Koko Crater has a great garden full of Plumeria trees. Plumerias are beautiful and the aroma is delightful! They only bloom in the late spring to early fall, though.

    10. On the eastern tip of the island is Makapuu Point (Ka Iwi) overlook trail.

That should get you started. You can find a lot more great ideas for Oahu at

and click on Oahu. And by the way, be sure you schedule time to “just chill” on the beach, too!

    My Recommendations:
    Hike up Diamond Head
    Visit the Honolulu Zoo
Watch the lighting of the Tiki tourches in Waikiki
Visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor
Tour the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor
Tour the submarine USS Bowfin at Pearl Harbor
Shop at the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. You will find the best prices on your Hawaiian shirt and other merchandise there.
Go to the top of Aloha Tower, shop, and dine at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
    Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center
    Tour the Dole Pineapple Plantation
Go to Sunset On the Beach for free Hawaiian entertainment and a free movie. There are food vendors there as well.
Eat and shop at the International Market.
Visit or stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Believe it or not, it was the tallest building in Honolulu for many years.
Enjoy a day at the beach.
Tour the island on the Bus. It’s one of the best ways to see the island.
