Most people think about The City of Malibu and think about one thing; the famous movie colony filled with the rich and famous and the beautiful people who live and party here on this wonderful stretch of coastline north of Los Angeles, on over 21 miles of coastline that runs from Santa Monica up the coast almost well into Ventura County.On those 21 miles of Pacific Ocean seashore, cliffs, ocean canyons and prime surfing spots, live almost 13,000 permanent and full time residents. Originally, this land was home to the Southern California Chumash Tribe of Native Americans who lived very long and happy here, and in the coastal mountains and valleys for thousands of years before the rich and famous discovered this new land.The Chumash Indians were known as peaceful fishermen, hunters and builders and often traveled from the mainland to the channel islands where many lived, made their pottery, built large boats, fishing equipment, tools, saddles, and farming equipment.
The housing options in Malibu today, are many and varied, with beautiful estates, large sprawling custom built mansion homes, and many small horse ranches dotting the area of meadows and canyons on the north side of PCH gently spreading over the hills into the San Fernando Valley. The types and styles of homes in Malibu will range from older beach side cottages and homes built back in the early 1900s, by the up and coming celebrities of the time, to bigger more modern older homes sprinkled throughout the hillsides and canyons, ranches, both large and small with active livestock including horses, some cattle, to marvelous estate type mansions that spread over acres with private guest houses, pools, pool houses, and just about everything and every amenity that money can buy.There are very exclusive communities here, one being the famous ‘Malibu Beach Colony’ where many of today’s movie celebrities, rock stars, writers, producers, directors and other people connected with Hollywood and the entertainment industry, reside full time, and along the coast, situated on the beautiful beaches, facing south into the warm California sun, are many newer large custom homes, many with 2 and 3 stories, estate style beach homes overlooking the Santa Monica bay, and Catalina Island to the south.These newer homes are becoming more and more evident as the older beach side cottages and homes are being torn down and making way for the new style homes with the square footage in the newer homes high, much higher than that of the old homes built in the early 1900s, and even through the 1970s.
Age, location, size, and updated amenities are important in determining the prices for both older and newer homes in Malibu, however you can bet that all of the prices will be in the very, very upper end of the price ranges no matter size, age or location and one should consider one more important factor with living in this city, and that is that Malibu is not the most convenient place to live if you expect to be able to get into Hollywood or Los Angeles in a hurry, or get home in a hurry from LAX or one of the major freeways, this being one of the main reasons many of the celebrities choose to live here; the fact that it is more or less isolated and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and work, and offers a certain degree of solitude and privacy, in unsurpassed beauty, not found in too many places these days.
